Either way, an intolerance for criticism shows a fundamental weakness inherent in every autocracy. In a functional political system, you shouldn’t have to murder your critics to stay in power.

Therein lies the rub Wes. Putin's Russia is not based on a "functional political system". He's a gang boss that the rest of the world somehow tolerates wasting oxygen on.
