Tim...nice story but the analogies to the GI Bill, VA loans and FHA loans have a glitch...they all need to be paid off. VA and FHA will take your house if you fail to pay.
That said, I have no real issue with the idea of student debt assistance. But it needs to be fair and equitable. If you have access to government records you would see that thousands of people paid off their student loans. Many of them in the recent past. Often they did that by mortgaging their homes (HELOC or refi's at <3% with federally deductible interest) and as recently as earlier this year. Shouldn't they be given some debt assistance too? They might not owe the government but they are still dealing with the challenge of the debt. Rather than give this to all student loan holder making less that $125k for individuals or $250K for couples, why not include those who paid their loans off (maybe in just the last 5 or 10 years) but still make less than the 125/250 threshold? Give them all a leg up. But Biden's goal was not to be fair, just check off the box from his election promise checklist....and buy some votes.
But anyway, I see the real target of your piece emerges around paragraph 18.....Trump, Guilani and conservatives; your usual suspects. Nothing new there.
